Black Top 03:02
black top black top let me be why you gotta keep on calling me one lane two lane three lanes wide day or night it’t just a place to hide I cant hold on I won’t let go nothing left but black top road rain drop rain drop won’t you fall can’t you hear me when I call cut right through this summer heat cool this road underneath my feet from a swollen sky a wind is gonna blow the dust from on this black top road walk it talk it ride or run don’t you move to slow it won’t let up on you until it’s done and there’s no place left to go but black top road black bird black bird when you cry it sounds like laughter in the sky watch those wings beating broad and black laugh with me I’m gonna laugh right back you can have the wires signs and poles we’re partners on this black top road black top black top let me be why you gotta keep on calling me your siren song is such a pretty trick a rainbow in an oil slick I cant hold on I won’t let go nothing left but black top road

I’ve got that cool blue feeling there’s frost upon the ground a chilly wind is blowing the fallen leaves around soon we’ll be closing windows it gets cold around this time of year then we’ll turn the clocks back time’s the only thing that seems to change round here I go to work in darkness then I go and sleep the day away every time we see each other it seems like we’ve got less and less to say life doesn’t stop for sadness and it don’t slow down for pain Indian summer’s over now I’m walking in the cold and freezing rain I go to work in darkness then I go and sleep the day away every time we see each other it seems like we’ve got less and less to say I still believe in loving I still believe in me and you I know we’re gonna turn a corner until then I’ll just be cool and blue

MyThe old man went to school at night so we could get ahead first up in the morning light last to go to bed he always tried to set me right it’s like I never heard a word he said up till now I’ve done ok and never cared that much about tomorrow my brother’s got a wife and kids my sister teaches school there’s all those things my mother did to keep me from acting like a fool l just seem to drift along and now it just seems kind of cruel they never shut the door each time that I reached out to beg or steal or borrow if time was money man I’d be a millionaire spent it just like pocket change man you couldn’t make me care about time all this precious time I stood out on the overpass and watched the cars go by hypnotized by trails of light beneath the evening sky If I said that I was coming home man we’d both know it was a lie so in the end we’ll both pretend that after all this time you still believe me I called that number late last night to find out where we stood I knew I never loved her right but I did the best I could she said don’t get sentimental baby, it was never all that good but I’ll take what I can get and be content to let my memories deceive me

keep the river on your right keep the river on your right keep the river on your right as you navigate the night It’s a mystery to me such a mystery to me it’s a mystery to me we treat our love so carelessly there’s beauty in this strange and desperate world it’ll take the measure of us all she was such a beautiful young girl we stood together true and tall you got to have a a heart of steel you got to have a a heart of steel you got to have a a heart of steel you got your shoulder to the wheel you wear it on your sleeve yeah you wear it on your sleeve you wear it on your sleeve enough to make a man believe I got no stories left that I can tell no second chance no brand new start and we both know that you can’t unring a bell but baby can’t you please unbreak this heart all the little souls all the little souls gone off to paradise while we stay here and we get old

in the nighttime world you know the hours move slow don’t look at the clock man there’s hours to go till the night falls away and the sun rises up in the sky you could drop by between 11 and 3 I’m full of advice and the next round’s on me then I turn my back and you leave without saying good by don’t it feel like there’s no turning back this is just the path that I’ve taken another day gently slips through the cracks close my eyes to the dawn that is breaking the streets are deserted as I make my way home sit on the couch and I’ll slowly get stoned in the flickering glow of the home shopping show on tv theres a guy selling knives so I give him a call he asks me which ones I want I say man I’ll take them all just wrap them up nice and send them off to my old used to be its the gift that keeps giving I hope that she thinks of me when she sits down to eat with her new family and I hope that she smiles and I sure hope that she gets the joke cause in the night time world you can get stuck in the past you might start to dream but you wake up to fast then you’re stuck lying there with the empty words you never spoke and it feels like there’s no turning back wake up and go through the motions another day gently slips through the cracks and this is just the lie that I’ve chosen

I rode my thumb when I was young to see what I could see your story’s yours out on the road I never felt so free head out for the Interstate try and flag one down the hardest part of every trip is getting out of town Cadillacs and Cherokees and White Freightliners too flash a smile and stand up straight and hope one stops for you when you’re out on the drag with your over night bag and no headlights as far as you can see watch those palm trees sway as the night time turns to day chickenhawks and jesus freaks and no one rides for free a roughneck bound for Lafayette to me for a ride we speed rapped for a thousand miles until his tranny died then its son do you know Jesus Christ and have you seen the light or do you wake up full of fear on the darkest side of night said I never missed a Sunday Mass till the day turned eighteen jesus told me we were square if you know what I mean it’s easy to get burned too scared to close your eyes the money spent the money earned the simple truth the complicated lies the tinted window midnight creeps they hit the shoulder slow put your bag in back slide in front and down the road you go the parking lots the motel rooms the truck stop shower stalls I had my fun I’m going home before the next night falls when you’re young you don’t hear anyone when you’re old no one hears you memories flash and stories fade leave you wondering what was true
7.
oh baby can’t you hear me calling It’s such a low and mournful sound and I feel like I am falling I thought you’d always be around I’ve got nothing to hold onto I just feel old and broken down and I can’t make myself not want you I thought you’d always be around The night would hold us i it’s dark embrace watch the world go passing by shadows fall like black silk lace and morning sings it’s cold grey lullaby and if you’re feeling sad and lonely and this old world has got you down I’ll always be your one and only you know I’ll always be around

Jack and Lee 03:07
get up in the morning honey taking out the trash the sun glints like a razor in the sky someone’s gonna come along and turn these bottles into cash and I’m gonna beg my darling not to cry I’m not going nowhere honey I ain’t gonna quit we can just maintain that status quo I get a little loaded honey and I start talking shit and it gets late and I don’t want to go we both know our parts say our lines hit our marks and they never see the sweat or feel the fear just like Jack and Lee close your eyes and It could be the days of wine and roses around here I can stop these hands from shaking go to work pay the rent call the folks and let them know we’re doing swell this hearts too old for breaking but it gets a little bent when I start to think I’ve shot our dreams to hell sometimes when I wake up in the middle of the night I’ve got no earthly idea of where I am then I feel you there beside me and I know I’ll be alright we forgive and we forget the best we can

What if God hates losers like me Look at what You made me do and if god hates losers like me my my troubles will never be through Its cool dark and quiet I like it just fine they don’t know what we’re hiding from I’ve got some money and I’ve got the time to blot out the thing I’ve become The words should come easy simple as pie like a song you might sing to a child but I just can’t say them and risk losing again so I guess I’m gonna be here awhile
