Guitarist Tom Heyman has amassed a pretty hefty résumé as a sideman (Alejandro Escovedo, John Vanderslice, Mark Eitzel) and as a bandmember (Go to Blazes, Marah, Map of Wyoming), but Deliver Me is only his second recording as a solo artist. Released on San Francisco's Jackpine Social Club label, Deliver Me is a woolly mix of folk (à la Tom Rush, Tim Buckley, and Fred Neil), gritty roots rock, blues, and even solid white boy R&B. Heyman has a slew of pals playing on this, including Wilco's John Stirratt, Chuck Prophet, and Eitzel. None of that stuff really matters, though, because Deliver Me stands and falls on its own due to Heyman's abilities as a songwriter and producer (he sat alongside Sean Coleman for this set). Mostly, Deliver Me sounds like a relic, something held over and unearthed from either the folk revival as it entered the 1960s or from the barroom rock era of the late '60s and early '70s. And it is drenched in the feel of San Francisco. It's laid-back, although it carries real tension in some of its song, and it feels good even when the tunes are sad, dour, or angry. The gems here are plentiful. The opener, "Alright," is a folksy country love song that stands tall in its realist optimism and contains a catchall chorus sung by a small backing group amidst the wandering and ringing guitars. The snaky "Monkey Out of Me" has to be a bandstand favorite. It sounds like something off a Tom Waits record from the Heartattack and Vine era. It's a broken love song tempered by a boozy swagger. Heyman is a fine storyteller as well, as evidenced by the rocking folksy blues of "Crazy Ray," the tale of a lost soul who stands out in the crowd because he stands out of time and place and has no idea. The cover of "Milk Cow Blues" feels unnecessary and would have made the record a bit shorter. However, Heyman's read of Ike Turner's "You Got What You Wanted" turns its guttersnipe R&B into something else altogether without losing the original's bite and slow-burning fire. The set closes with "Listen to the Rain," a love song with backbone. It's simple and understated yet masculine and tough. The Wurlitzer growls under the mix as Heyman's blend of guitars and pedal steel slowly unfurls the tune, letting it ease out into the open without artifice or guile. Ultimately, this is a wildly diverse effort. It contains a rainbow of emotions, colors, and hues. Heyman's not the greatest lyricist in the world, but he's growing by leaps and bounds, and his song structures are beguiling and well developed. Deliver Me is a keeper.

Alright 02:29
When that silence hangs between us like a shroud It’ll be all right it’ll be alright And those words we never dreamed we’d say out loud are gonna disappear Up into the night You can pray for all the trouble that I’ve been It’ll be all right it’ll be all right Tomorrow I’ll start living life again It’ll be all right it’ll be all right I offer up this gut string serenade It’ll be all right it’ll be all right Keeping all those promises I made It’ll be all right it’ll be all right You’re my weakness don’t you know it’s true It’ll be all right it’ll be all right There’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do for you It’ll be all right it’ll be all right You’re a searchlight arcing across an evening sky It’ll be all right It’ll be alright Gonna light the way to heaven when I die It’ll be all right it’ll be alright

Deliver Me 04:40
When I said I recognized him his smile lit up the car I turned off the meter we weren’t going all that far We talked about the old days where the good times go so fast Staring out the window at the city flashing past Delivers me deliver me take me in your arms and deliver me Deliver me deliver me lead me not into temptation He used to play the regal kept a penthouse at the Ritz I picked him up in Chinatown at the ninth street Motel Six We took a ride up Osage and there was nothing out on Pine Said there’s a special place the people know my name We’re gonna go there one more time Deliver me deliver me take me in your arms and deliver me Deliver me deliver me lead me not into temptation They found him on the sidewalk by the hospital at dawn They thought that he was sleeping his coat and shoes were gone I slid off a barstool with my last drink of the night Someone said David Ruffin’s dead and I kept my mouth shut tight Deliver me deliver me take me in your arms and deliver me Deliver me deliver me lead me not into temptation

Bottles 03:36
I‘ve been staring at the bottles lined up by the window How they catch the colors of a dying afternoon And I feel like I’ve been dreaming but I’ve been hustling and I been scheming And I know I’ve been so lucky This streak could end real soon I've been staring at the bottles remembering the places All the pretty faces and all the hazy smiles When I had it all together I was cool and smooth as old black leather I could stretch the lies like railroad ties end on end mile after mile I know as the night settles in like a solemn vow The secrets we once shared like prayers Will be gone like the shadows at dawn tell me where are they now I’ve been staring at the bottles I’ve lined them up like tombstones I’ve been hiding from the future I been flinching at the past And these nights keep getting longer, this feeling is getting stronger I know I’ve been so lucky tell me how long can this streak last

Crazy Ray 02:54
Crazy Ray was 5 foot 4 his hair piled high in a shiny pompadour He’s checking all the angles, greasing all the wheels A couple inches taller in his Cuban heels A dab of royal crown on a rat-tail comb Nineteen points on a payday loan A Saint Jude medallion you know Ray’s got hope He’s washing out his shirts with motel soap Rockabilly Ray with his elevator shoes Fat lip, swivel hip got the milk cow blues Sunday morning and you don’t feel right You’ve been hanging out with Ray on Saturday night Slapping backs and shaking hands spilling drinks making plans He’s a jukebox junkie he would break into a tune Sound like a stray dog howling at a midnight moon Lights are coming on but Ray don’t want to leave You’re headed for the door you feel him tugging at your sleeve Ray would spit and stumble as you try to lean away Listen to him mumble you can barely hear him say I made my own luck and I took my own chances Listen cause I’m talking now If you get stuck its just bad circumstances I pay what I owe even though it don’t matter anyhow Rockabilly Ray with his elevator shoes Fat lip swivel hip got the milk cow blues Sunday morning and you don’t feel right You’ve been hanging out with Ray on Saturday night

There’s a place that we could go in the neighborhood Treat me just like family there, they treat me pretty good I can put my fingers on anything I need Got an ache down deep inside, its like a hungry little mouth I’ve got to feed Black Mollies Pink hearts and White Crosses I’ve been winning all the cut decks and all the coin tosses Got a pocket full of quarters and razor in my shoe There’s a phone booth on the corner that’s where I’ll be going to Black Mollies Pink Hearts and White Crosses How about old what’s his name you know who I mean Used to wear his pants real tight, he used to run this scene And I cleaned my place up nice I even washed the floors If you see anything you want, don’t hesitate it’s yours Black Mollies Pink Hearts and White Crosses I’ve been winning all the cut decks and all the coin tosses After all the times I’ve showed you baby you still got it wrong Why you got to drop the needle in the middle of the song Black Mollies Pink Hearts and White Crosses How come you can’t look at me the way I look at you Baby you’re the living end just tell me what I have to do To make you hold my hand real tight I won’t feel so alone When the sun starts beating down and everyone’s gone home Black Mollies Pink Hearts and White Crosses I’m packing up all of my thing s and cutting my losses Who’s that knock knock knocking at my door I’ve got nothing left to give but you keep coming back for more Black Mollies Pink Hearts and White Crosses

Fool For You 03:47
Well hey you know I’m such a fool for you If you just take me back then you could be my fool too These waking hours get so hard to bear Visions of you hang like smoke in the air I call out your name to the walls and the floors Chasing down ghosts through the windows and doors Crying hey you know I’m such a fool for you If you just take me back then you could be my fool too I get so high that the world falls away Just like leaves in the wind on a bright winter’s day And I drift straight on back to the on a soft golden light Deep in a dream on a narcotic night Crying hey you know I’m such a fool for you If you just take me back then you could be my fool too I tried to play it straight but I guess I lost my nerve You got what you want I’m gonna get what I deserve I lay myself low every chance I get now I’m gonna get back to you the only way I know how Crying hey you know I’m such a fool for you If you just take me back then you could be my fool too

Slip Away 02:27
How’d I let it slip away How’d I let it slip away   It was a feeling I once had the only thing I feel is bad How’d I let it slip away Back when I still had my pride Back when I still had my pride I had a love I couldn’t hide it came from way down deep inside   And I let it slip away I didn’t know what I should do My wicked wishes all came true I lit a match and called your name Closed my eyes held my fingers to the flame I go walking out at night Lord at any time of night I’m not worried or afraid got a little bargain that I made When I let it slip away

Haunted 04:13
Staring at the spaces where the pictures used to hang up on the wall Waiting for the silence as another empty night begins to fall Jump down turn around what goes bump in the night Cross your fingers knock on wood but don’t turn out the light This house is haunted Sun shines through the window I can feel the light explode behind my eyes The fading morning wipes away the night just like a memory as it dies I been adding up the hours man I’m counting up the days Get your money ready you know every body pays This house is haunted I turn out all the lights but I still see that wine stained grin A promise is a promise why won’t you to tell me where you’ve been This house is haunted When I turn on the radio I like to keep it blasting in my ear That AM oldies station playing all my favorite hits of yesteryear Got the O’Jays and the Hollies and the Beach Boys and the Stones I haven’t seen a soul for days now but I know I’m not alone This house is haunted

Listen to that rain coming down this morning Falling down so hard you know it simply makes me smile Baby I don’t care I don’t have to be nowhere I can lay right here beside you for a while Listen to that rain waiting on the thunder Watching as the lightning flashes bright across the sky The river it might rise but it can never take us under Wherever I’m with you the ground is high I’d beg I’d plead I’d steal To know that you still feel The same way I do About you all the time Listen to that rain it don’t make any difference It could just keep falling and the sun refuse to shine I can close my eyes and be at peace this morning I’ve done all that I can do to make you mine
